Need simple accommodations in Auckland?!

For a one-night stay in Auckland when I first arrived in New Zealand, I made a reservation for the Auckland City Lodge. It was walking distance to eateries, tourist sites, and had pretty good reviews online. A room at the time cost $50 NZ Dollars which at the time for me would have been about $40 odd US dollars. I had never stayed in a hostel before my round the world trip so I thought I would start off easy and stay in a private room in a backpacker’s environment for my first night.

I was a newbie to long-term travel and was not going to be staying in my usual cushy boutique hotels. I was a bit nervous about this but I figured if I was going to stretch my money out, budget accommodations were going to have to do. My room at the Auckland City Lodge was very small but it had a mini fridge, tea kettle/coffee maker, a heater, a big window, and a private bathroom. There was a grocery store nearby where I picked up some snacks for my bus ride the next day as well as some yogurt for breakfast. The only thing that I was not happy with was the fact that wi-fi was very expensive. In fact, I found this to be the case all over New Zealand during my round the world trip.

TRIP PLANNING STARTS HERE

HELPFUL GENERAL TRAVEL TIPS

  • Flights: Find a cheap flight using Skyscanner or Momondo. I like these two booking sites because they both search all websites and airlines around the globe including budget airlines.
  • Accommodations: I use Booking.com or Tripadvisor to find the best rates on hotels. Hotels.com offers a free night after booking 10 nights.
  • Travel Insurance: Having gotten sick on my travels in the past, I never travel without being insured. You never know when something may happen. For my round the world trip and extended long-term travel, I use World Nomads. For other trips, I have used Roam Right and they cover activities like extreme sports.

I was only in Auckland for less than a day so I didn’t need a luxurious room. I was paying to pass out in a bed for a few hours.  If you want a no frills place to stay in the city and are not spending a lot of time in your room, I would suggest Auckland City Lodge.
