Hoi An, Vietnam: A Photo Diary & Travel Inspiration

Planning a trip to Vietnam? Be sure to visit Hoi An!

I am not sure why I have never shared an album of my photos from my short visit Hoi An yet. While I was traveling through Vietnam, I spent time with my friend Quinn and his wife Tran who were living in Nha Trang at the time. Quinn’s dad and a friend were visiting at the same time and they planned on going to Hoi An, a popular coastal destination north of Nha Trang. I was heading north to Hanoi so I joined them for a few days before continuing on my journey.

Hoi An is a city that I am completely enamored with. When friends or people ask what they should do when they visit the country, I always recommend it. While it is very touristy, the city still has a lot of charm and really great food. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site and you can still see the different influences in the city’s architecture.

While I don’t have a lot of tips for Hoi An, I did take quite a few photos of my time there and hopefully, it inspires you to visit.

Here are some of my favorite photos:

  • When I traveled to Hoi An, we took a short and cheap flight from Nha Trang on Vietnam Airlines. If you’re short on time, sometimes it’s just easier to fly. We flew into Da Nang Airport and hired a taxi for our group to take us to Hoi An.
  • On my round the world trip I didn’t normally stay in spendy places but for Hoi An, I shared a room with my friend Nick at the Life Heritage Resort, which is now the Anantara. It was a gorgeous resort with a pool and an impeccable daily breakfast buffet of Vietnamese and Western specialties.
  • We spent our time exploring, catching up with friends, and eating. While I don’t recall all the fine details of our time there but I do remember eating ban bao vac or Hoi An’s specialty, the white rose dumpling (a must!) as well as banh mi from Banh Mi Phuong, made famous by Anthony Bourdain in his show “No Reservations”. One evening a big group of us had a lovely dinner at Mango Rooms which is owned by Duc Tran, a Vietnamese American chef.
  • If I were to go back I would rent a bicycle and just tour around town.
  • If you’re interested in getting clothes custom tailored, there are hundreds of tailor shops. My friends had a coat made for their daughter and it was made within a few hours. My friend KC had 2 suits made along with 5 button-up shirts and it cost him less than $200US. He picked out the material, they measured him and he picked up his clothes the next day.
