HELPFUL GENERAL TRAVEL TIPS
- Flights: Find a cheap flight using Skyscanner or Momondo. I like these two booking sites because they both search all websites and airlines around the globe including budget airlines.
- Accommodations: I use Booking.com or Tripadvisor to find the best rates on hotels. Hotels.com offers a free night after booking 10 nights
- Get up to $40 off your first Air Bnb stay by using this code!
- Travel Insurance: Having gotten sick on my travels in the past, I never travel without being insured. You never know when something may happen. For my round the world trip and extended long-term travel, I use World Nomads. For other trips, I have used Roam Right and they cover activities like extreme sports.
While I was in Victoria, Canada, I spent a night in Oak Bay. If you’re unfamiliar with Oak Bay, it’s a seaside community just outside of Victoria with very British heritage. It’s really cute and charming and even though I grew up in BC and have been to Victoria many times, I had never been to that area.
When I was driving towards the hotel from Victoria, I drove along Beach Drive. Do take your time when you do, it’s so picturesque and take a stop if you can. I did right here:
Don’t you just want to sit here and hang out a while? I did!!!
Gorgeous scenery along Beach Drive
From the moment I drove up to Oak Bay Beach Hotel, everything was perfect. The staff was genuine and friendly, my room was comfy, I had a beautiful ocean view, and a little kitchenette. This is the kind of place where you want to stay a while. Sadly, I only had one night to experience this seaside gem.
Love that they kept the classic old signage even after renovating
Here’s my lovely suite with an ocean view and patio
In the morning I grabbed a latte and a pastry from Kate’s Cafe and took it out to my patio so I can soak this in:
Seriously…right?!!! The view from my suite
I never take baths at home…just in nice hotels :)
Here’s a better look at the bathroom
I couldn’t resist having a spa treatment! My facial was incredible at the Boat House Spa.
I love spas and robes!
Pool area in the day time
Hot tub views in the day
You know what I love? 24 Hour outdoor heated pools!!! Oak Bay has 3!!!
I may have had a solo hot tub party!
They have a great “living room” where you can sit by the fireplace and read a book!
They may also have a Rolls that can pick you up :)
And for the piece de resistance:
During my stay, I attended their Winemaker’s Dinner with Mission Hill Winery and their wine educator Ingo Grady. I am by no means any kind of wine expert or oenophile, but it was an amazing experience to be a part of. I would recommend anyone who wants to learn more wines and eat a perfectly complemented meal. This is a perfect splurge night out for the ladies or with your significant other. Living in California, I don’t get to experience much Canadian wine so I was more than happy to drink Mission Hill all night. Now I’m planning a girls trip out to BC’s interior!
This was our meal along with the wine pairing:
First Course
Soppresatta Wrapped Sea Scallop and Spot Prawn Mosaic
Sea Broth
paired with Martin’s Lane Riesling, 2012
Second Course
Pan Seared Sable Fish
Apple and Fennel Puree, Citrus Butter Sauce
paired with Perpetua Chardonnay, 2011
Third Course
Pressing of Foie Gras and Duck Confit,
Sour Cherry Puree, Pickled Beets, and Salted Walnuts
paired with Mission Hill Reserve Pinot Noir, 2012
Palate Cleanser
Green Apple Champagne Sorbet
Fourth Course
Roast Lamb Saddle
Truffle Carrot, Braised Portabella, Kennebec Rosti, Red Wine Sauce
paired with Legacy Series Compendium, 2010
Fifth Course
Okanagan Tiger Blue Semifreddo
Oculus Poached Pear, Dark Chocolate
paired with Legacy Series Oculus
After dinner, I had a few more drinks at the Snug Pub with my new friends who sat with me at dinner. It was really lovely and I wish I had more time so I can have a proper pub meal at Victoria’s oldest pub.
Overall, I had a relaxing and luxurious stay at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. It’s perfect for everyone; girlfriends, couples, and even families. There are so many great events for both visitors and locals. There’s a great room just off of the lobby with an amazing fireplace. I didn’t have enough time, but I would definitely take my iPad, a latte and read the paper here.
Everything about this hotel is done well and I can’t recommend it enough. I know you’re thinking that my stay was extra nice because I’m a travel writer, but that is beside the point. Every guest from what I saw was given the 5-star experience. Many of the staff that I spoke with had been here for years and were like a tight-knit family. I can honestly say that I’ll be back again to the Oak Bay Beach Hotel and if I could move in, I would!
