I remember it was such an ordeal to get a train ticket from San Sebastian, Spain to go to Paris. After San Sebastian, almost everyone goes to Paris but there is not a simple way to get a train ticket in the city. The trains are not interconnected between the two countries, so in order to get a ticket to France, you have to go over the French border and physically buy a ticket. The journey takes approximately an hour and some to do so. You go to a town called Hendaye, France. And when I went to Hendaye to buy my ticket, my American debit and credit cards did not work because at the time they did not have chips. Most ATM machines in Europe need a chip to work. Luckily a nice Kiwi boy allowed me use his debit card and I repaid him with cash. I remember thinking that whoever opened a train ticket to France from Spain business in San Sebastian would make a serious profit.
I took the high-speed train with a girl I had met from San Sebastian to Paris. It took roughly 6 hours. To kill the time we chatted, read books, and napped.
Now for some Paris inspiration!
A photo from my friend Joanne’s apartment
The photo above is one of my favorite photos from my time in Paris. I remember waking up the morning after I arrived and my friends Joanne and Isabel had left for school. I was given instructions on how to use the Metro and info about the area. The first thing I did was look out the window from the living room. I noticed that the view from Jo’s room was awesome so I snuck into her’s and took this photo of the block in Montmartre.
The beautiful Sacre Couer in Montmartre
Sacred Heart Cathedral aka Sacre Couer in Montmartre. You will see loads of people hanging out on the steps. I hung out here a lot and just people watched.
At night in Montmartre
It’s so pretty at night during Christmas time in Montmartre. I loved Paris. I find it strange when people don’t like it. I know it helped that I had local friends and visiting friends there at the same time but I also spent a lot of time on my own just wandering the streets. It’s so beautiful and rich with history!
Walking around Le Jardin Tuileries
Black and white Parisian photos always look more epic – Ferris wheel near Tuileries Garden
A Staub Cocotte
I ordered a coq au vin while having lunch with friends and it came out in this, I was so excited. Too perfect! I may have also ordered coq au vin just to say coq au vin!

Inside Merci shop
If you do a bit of shopping or want to have coffee somewhere cool, I highly recommend Merci. It’s a fantastic shop in Paris!
Getting festive inside Merci
I also loved the shop Colette on Rue St Honore (it has since shuttered)!
Backstage at the Flogging Molly Show at the Bataclan
I’m pretty lucky to have been able to run into friends while I was traveling. My friend Matt is in the band Flogging Molly and they were playing in Paris and he invited me and some girlfriends to the show. I also got to see my friends Amy, Taj, and Leonard who are from the US who also happened to be in Paris when I was there.
Ultimate Paris inspiration! La Tour Eiffel
Of course, the Eiffel Tower! I did not climb up it but I didn’t think it was necessary. I did get goosebumps when I saw it for the first time!
Did you know that it lights up like this in the evening! All sparkly!
