Travel Fitness And Health Tips | Maintaining When You Travel

Travel Fitness - Snowshoeing

Sharing my favourite travel fitness and health tips for the road!

When you travel, it’s easy to indulge and be lazy. I know in the past I have said, “Forget exercise, I’m on holiday! YOLO!” You want to eat with reckless abandon and lay around your comfy hotel bed. I get it! I’ve done it countless times myself. In this post, I share travel fitness and health tips in order to maintain your healthy lifestyle when you go on trips.

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #1 – TAKE A DROP IN CLASS WHEN YOU TRAVEL

You can always look up different fitness studios and do a drop in class. The best part about first-time visits is they are often free or heavily discounted. If you’re travelling for a few days, sometimes there are discounted weeks at fitness studios. If you have a membership to a gym, check if they have one in the city you are travelling to or if they have an affiliate.

Class Pass is a popular website and app where a monthly membership allows you to drop into different fitness studios in your city or other cities. You can take different classes like yoga, spin, boxing, etc to avoid boredom.

TRIP PLANNING STARTS HERE

HELPFUL GENERAL TRAVEL TIPS

  • Flights: Find a cheap flight using Skyscanner or Momondo. I like these two booking sites because they both search all websites and airlines around the globe including budget airlines.
  • Accommodations: I use Booking.com or Tripadvisor to find the best rates on hotels. Hotels.com offers a free night after booking 10 nights.
  • Get up to $40 off your first Air Bnb stay by using this code!
  • Travel Insurance: Having gotten sick on my travels in the past, I never travel without being insured. You never know when something may happen. For my round the world trip and extended long-term travel, I use World Nomads. For other trips, I have used Roam Right and they cover activities like extreme sports.

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #2 – BRING A PORTABLE GYM

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #3 – USE THE HOTEL GYM

Most hotels have a gym with some basic equipment. Jump on the treadmill and do a warm-up and then hit the weight machines. Even a 20-minute workout is better than nothing if you’re time-crunched. Or split up your workout and do 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes later in the day.

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #4 – WALK

This one is easy. As you go sightseeing around a new travel destination, walk as much as you can. While I was travelling on my round the world trip, I could easily walk up to 10 hours a day while exploring. I rarely took cabs and even lost weight in Paris when I was eating my way through all the pastry shops!

The Highline New York City

Walk somewhere scenic like The Highline in NYC

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #5 – RUN

Not everyone loves running but if you do, running is free everywhere! Not only is it a great way to maintain your fitness program when you travel but it’s great for sightseeing too. Just be sure to run during daylight and map out your course in safe places or where there’s a lot of people.

When I went to Vancouver for a visit, I ran a 10K race

To avoid carrying too many things I like to wear a running belt so that I can play music as well as have my phone along with me when I run. Because I upgrade phones fairly often, I don’t like to get one that is size specific to a phone. This one by SPI Belt has been fantastic and has a slim profile yet expands to hold a phone, cards, and keys.

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #6 – HIKE

Love the outdoors? I’ve gotten more and more into hiking over the past few years and love going for hikes when I travel. You often get to see beautiful views besides getting in a good workout.

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #8 – PARTAKE IN THE LOCAL SPORT

Travelling to a winter resort? Go snowboarding or skiing. Not into those sports? Go snowshoeing! It’s just walking in the snow! Who can resist a gorgeous surfing beach destination? If you don’t surf already, take a class. It’s one of the best full body workouts around.

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #9 – USE FITNESS APPS

Do you have a smartphone? There are so many fitness and health apps that can help you train even when you’re travelling. Some of my favourite fitness apps are Nike Training Club, Aaptiv and Map My Run.

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #10 – YOUTUBE WORKOUT VIDEOS

Are you more of a workout video person? Perhaps you practice yoga at home? There are tons of free YouTube workout videos. This is perfect if you travel with your laptop or iPad. I love Yoga with Adrienne or Shona Vertue on YouTube.

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #11 – STAY HYDRATED

Be sure to drink a lot of water! If you want to avoid buying bottled water, use a portable water bottle with a filter.

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #12 – EAT SMART

It’s easy to overindulge when you travel. Make healthy decisions or even swaps. Want dessert with your dinner? Eat a salad with protein and lower your carb intake. Planning on indulging in a special dinner? Eat healthy throughout the day. I always try to eat a healthy breakfast when I travel, that way I stay mindful of my health when I start my day.

Jusu Juice Bar Victoria

I know that my veggie intake is low when I travel so I buy green juices (don’t get something too sweet)

TRAVEL FITNESS TIP #13 – BRING ALONG HEALTHY SNACKS

Bring or buy healthy snacks with you. It’s easy to get famished while exploring and then buy unhealthy/junk food. Bring a protein bar or fruit in your bag so that you don’t resort to unhealthy eating.
