Bruges: A Must When Visiting Belgium + Photo Inspiration
Are you planning to visit Belgium? Add Bruges to your itinerary!
While I post a lot about Asia because I spent over a year travelling there, I did spend 4 months of my round the world trip in Europe. One place I didn’t have prior plans to visit but was fond of is Bruges. My original plans were to spend a few days in Brussels but changed my mind. Many friends and travellers recommended Bruges and Ghent to me. After having a not that great afternoon in Brussels, I jumped on a train and booked a few nights in Bruges.

HELPFUL GENERAL TRAVEL TIPS
- Flights: Find a cheap flight using Skyscanner or Momondo. I like these two booking sites because they both search all websites and airlines around the globe including budget airlines.
- Accommodations: I use Booking.com or Tripadvisor to find the best rates on hotels. Hotels.com offers a free night after booking 10 nights.
- Get up to $40 off your first Air Bnb stay by using this code!
- Travel Insurance: Having gotten sick on my travels in the past, I never travel without being insured. You never know when something may happen. For my round the world trip and extended long-term travel, I use World Nomads. For other trips, I have used Roam Right and they cover activities like extreme sports.
Bruges is located in northwestern Belgium. The trains from Brussels leave the Brussels-Zuid/Brussels-Midi Station every half hour and if you are arriving from Paris, it is over 3 hours by train. When I took the train there, it was full. My carriage was standing room only the entire ride.
Bruges is very walkable so if you have a backpack it is easy to walk to and from the train station. My rolling suitcase on the cobblestones would have been a pain plus it was late at night, so I took a taxi. When I was leaving, the bus stop to the train station was just around the corner from my hostel. Going back to the station I knew where I was going and it was daylight so taking public transportation was fine.
While I was in Bruges I befriended a couple of students from Asia in my hostel room. They were studying abroad in Spain and had a reading break. For 2 days we explored together, went to the Christmas market, visited a few museums, and ate a lot.
