Kimpton Hotel Monaco In Portland, Oregon | A Detailed Review
Planning a trip to Portland? Need a hotel?
In the last few years, I have visited and spent a good chunk of time in Portland. I have also stayed at a handful of hotels in the downtown area. In the past, I’ve stayed at Kimpton hotels in California and Chicago and impressed with my recent stay at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco in Portland.
When I arrived at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco, the doorman lets me know I could drive down into the underground parkade where they could help me with my bags and valet my car. Immediately I noticed bicycles with a sign that said free use for hotel guests. It wasn’t warm enough for me to go for a ride, but this would be perfect for guests who come during warmer months since Portland is so bicycle friendly.
To check in you take an elevator from the parking garage, which was a very simple process. I arrived shortly before the complimentary happy hour for guests so while I was waiting I checked into my room quickly. Then, of course, I went downstairs for a drink. At the happy hour, they were serving red and white wine or craft beer.

HELPFUL GENERAL TRAVEL TIPS
- Flights: Find a cheap flight using Skyscanner or Momondo. I like these two booking sites because they both search all websites and airlines around the globe including budget airlines.
- Accommodations: I use Booking.com or Tripadvisor to find the best rates on hotels. Hotels.com offers a free night after booking 10 nights.
- Get up to $40 off your first Air BnB stay by using this code!
- Travel Insurance: Having gotten sick on my travels in the past, I never travel without being insured. You never know when something may happen. For my round the world trip and extended long-term travel, I use World Nomads. For other trips, I have used Roam Right and they cover activities like extreme sports.
After happy hour, I walked down the road to have more happy hour at a restaurant I’ve been meaning to try. Kimpton Hotel Monaco is right in the heart of downtown Portland and walking distance to amazing restaurants and shops. After dinner, I went back to my room to do a bit of work and relax in my comfortable room.
Check out for the hotel room was not till noon the next day, so I had all morning to enjoy my room. I had a corner suite so I had a huge window and amazing light. Complimentary tea and coffee are available in the lobby. But I’m a crazy coffee fiend, so I walked a couple of blocks over to a popular coffee shop. I grabbed a coffee and something small to nibble on for breakfast so I could spend more time in my room.
Here are some photos of the hotel and my suite:

Doing a bit of work in bed in robe #2. I could have done this forever!
What I loved about Kimpton Hotel Monaco:
- Walking distance to Pioneer Square, the waterfront, Powells Books, coffee shops, other great restaurants, and shopping
- Free wifi (if you join their Karma rewards program you have free wifi on all devices)
- spacious suites
- free bicycles to use
- gym
- a restaurant downstairs/room service
- complimentary happy hour (who doesn’t love free drinks!)
- dog-friendly (while I don’t have a pet, I know lots of people do and travel with them)
- good bathroom amenities – so handy when only travelling with carry-on due to liquid limits
- fluffy bathrobes
- I’m a sucker for linens and theirs are by Frette (I’m a little bougie…I know!)
- separate living room area – great if you’re travelling with friends or partners to have some separate space
- closet and safe
- fun decor
- big windows for natural light
I don’t have any complaints about my stay. I only stayed one night, but everything was great. I’ve stayed with the Kimpton before in other locations and everything was up to par. I’m definitely a fan and would stay at Kimpton Hotel Monaco in Portland again on future visits.
