Thinking about buying an NYC CityPass?

In the fall of 2013, my cousin Chris who owns a gallery in Melbourne planned on visiting New York. He was going for work and had all the big museums on his trip itinerary. Because he lives all the way in Australia, I don’t get to see him very much. This was a perfect opportunity to meet up with him since he was going to be on my side of the world. Since I love museums as well, I asked if I could tag along with him. And NYC CityPASS came in handy for our Big Apple explorations.

**Please note that this post has been updated in June 2019. The prices of the attractions and CityPASS have gone up but the savings are still great. Also, you can now use a Mobile Voucher instead of having a pass mailed to you.**

Many cities like New York, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Toronto, Seattle, and Tampa have CityPasses. The passes allow you to visit many popular tourist attractions and save money. (Please note the Hollywood program ended at the end of February 2014).

TRIP PLANNING STARTS HERE

HELPFUL GENERAL TRAVEL TIPS

  • Flights: Find a cheap flight using Skyscanner or Momondo. I like these two booking sites because they both search all websites and airlines around the globe including budget airlines.
  • Accommodations: I use Booking.com or Tripadvisor to find the best rates on hotels. Hotels.com offers a free night after booking 10 nights.
  • Get up to $40 off your first Air Bnb stay by using this code!
  • Travel Insurance: Having gotten sick on my travels in the past, I never travel without being insured. You never know when something may happen. For my round the world trip and extended long-term travel, I use World Nomads. For other trips, I have used Roam Right and they cover activities like extreme sports.

NYC CityPASS is fantastic! It’s perfect for art lovers like myself. Besides museums like the MET, the MOMA, the Guggenheim, and the American Museum of Natural History, you can also head over to Ellis Island to see the Statue of Liberty, go to the Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Center), and to the Empire State Building Observatory.

In all of the times I have visited NYC and including the time I lived there, I had never been to the top of the Empire State nor the Top of the Rock.  I had to cross all of these things off my NYC to do list! I did have time to go to the Statue of Liberty or the Museum of Natural History (I’d already visited before) but here is savings breakdown for what I did do:

Admission prices

Empire State Building – $45
Top of the Rock – $41
Guggenheim – $25
The Met – $25
MOMA – $25

NYC CityPASS costs $133. Even though I didn’t go to every site, I still would have saved $28. That’s a budget meal right in NYC or a lot of coffees! Yay for savings! Please note that you must use your pass within 9 consecutive days after your first visit to one of the sites.

The MOMA

While we were at the MOMA, we were able to see a special exhibit of paintings by Rene Magritte. The coolest thing was one of the pieces was on loan from the National Gallery of Australia which was framed by my cousins’ framing company, Fini Frames.
